What is Low Testosterone?

Testosterone levels in males peak during adolescence and early adulthood. As you get older, your testosterone level gradually decline at a rate of about 1 percent per year after age 30.

‘Low testosterone’ is considered any amount naturally produced by the body (at any age), which proves insufficient for normal functioning. The effects of low testosterone impact several bodily systems, and numerous areas of life. Some of the primary symptoms are:

Changes in sexual function. This may include reduced sexual desire/libido; erectile dysfunction - the inability to become sexually aroused/achieve erections, fewer spontaneous erections (both awake and during sleep), reduced quality and duration of erections; decreased sperm count & motility and; ultimately infertility.

Changes in sleep patterns. Light or easily disturbed sleep, and a decreased ability to reach the latter stages of sleep (3, 4, and REM); insomnia or a reduction in the ability to readily fall asleep and; other sleep disturbances and sensitivities including the inability to sleep through the night.

Physical changes. Increased body fat percentage; reduced muscle mass and strength; decreased bone density; breast tenderness, swelling, or nodules/lumps (gynecomastia – female breast tissue in men); hair loss (both thinning and falling out); hot flashes and; a general lack of energy.

Emotional changes. A decrease in motivation and/or self-confidence; mental clarity problems like trouble concentrating, recalling facts, or remembering things; moodiness and seemingly bipolar (rapid or extreme) mood swings; unwarranted feelings of sadness, loneliness or depression and; a general decreased sense of well-being.

Some men try to remedy low testosterone by taking libido and sexual performance enhancing drugs like Viagra and Cialis. However, as seen within the symptoms above, the problem of low testosterone doesn’t merely affect your sex life. What’s important to remember is that low testosterone is a systemic condition, which negatively impacts your overall quality of life.
